Reading Homework

Nightly reading is part of the assigned homework in Language Arts each week.

Reading minutes include:

·         AR books or Free Choice Books  at ZPD reading level or higher

·         Magazines Age appropriate magazines such as: Sports Illustrated for Kids, Kids Discover, Cricket, etc., should be actual reading, not just looking at the pictures

·         Newspaper Articles actual reading, not just paging through the news

·         Comic Books actual reading, not just looking at the pictures

Reading minutes DO NOT include classroom assignments from social studies, reading, math, or science, or time spent on book reports or other assigned projects.

Power Reading

One Power Reading session is also required each week. (Directions for Power Reading are included on the Reading Homework Recording Sheet.)  Power Reading needs to be done with a parent, grandparent, or other caring adult, unless other arrangements have been made. A Power Reading session can count as one of your reading days. Write PR in the square for that day.

It is to be signed by a parent and returned to school the following Monday. Points will be given for each week’s reading and then averaged for one grade at the end of the quarter.

Power Reading

Strong reading comprehension skills are the basis for success in all subject areas. You can help your child develop these skills with Power Reading, a technique that will increase reading comprehension, fluency, and listening skills. A Power Reading session takes only 15 minutes.

1.     Read to your child. Read aloud to your child for 5 minutes. Pronounce words carefully and clearly, and make appropriate pauses for periods and commas.

2.    Listen to your child read. Have your child continue reading the same passage aloud at the point where you stopped reading. Remind your child to read slowly and read so the words make sense.

3.    Ask questions about the material that was read. Check how well your child was listening and reading by asking general questions about the material you read aloud and the material your child read aloud.

4.    Write “PR” the appropriate box.
