Vincent van Gogh: Sunflowers
ala Fourth Grade

Vincent van Gogh's Sunflower paintings have been duplicated many times by various artists and displayed everywhere; from art expos to households to fourth grade classrooms. The fourth graders in Mrs. Hoyme's classroom talked about the artist, his life, and his work. We learned he was the son of a Dutch pastor, a teacher, and a missionary in a coal mining district in Belgium. We also learned he was not a well man and took his own life at the age of 37.

Studying the painting Sunflower, we noticed the vibrant colors typically associated with the life of sunflowers: bright yellows of the full bloom to the browns of the wilting and dying blooms. Each student in our classroom made a bloom for our classroom replica of this famous work of art.
