Fourth Grade
Students
Create a
Treasure Island Adventure

The fourth graders have been building mapping skills by studying cardinal and intermediate directions, map keys, the use of map scales, and the use of grid references to find locations on a map. They also learned how to give and follow directions on a map.
Each fourth grade
student had the opportunity to show what he/she knew about using maps by
completing the Treasure Island Adventure map-skills project. Each student
created his/her own Treasure Island map and marked a buried treasure on it. The
requirements of the map included:
-at least ten
different landforms on the island;
-two distinct regions (such as rainforest, desert, etc.);
-a buried treasure hidden somewhere on the island and disguised with artwork;
-a map legend or key;
-a compass rose;
-a map scale;
-title;
-the use of an alphanumeric grid; and,
-directions to find the treasure using grid references and intermediate and
cardinal directions.
The students had great fun assembling the projects by tearing the edges of the
map, legend, and directions to make them look old, "antiquing" them using chalk,
and gluing the parts on background paper. Enjoy our pictures of the hall
display.
