Boss of the Plains
Stetson Hat Posters
In our reading class, we read a biography about John Stetson, the man who invented the "Boss of the Plains, better known to most of us as the Stetson hat. In this story we discovered Mr. Stetson was a good inventor because he was a creative thinker. He used old felt-making techniques to make a new kind of hat. He was a good businessman because he was persistent: he tried selling several hat styles before the Boss of the Plains succeeded. invention and his perseverance that made this invention a success.
Each of us were assigned the task of creating an advertisement for the hat. We were to describe it and tell why it was the best in the West. Illustrations helped us make the sale to the Westerners of the 1860s. We particularly wanted to convince miners and cowboys that this hat was the perfect fit.
