Valentine Mosaic Art

The fourth graders in Mrs. Hoyme's classroom used old magazines, construction paper, and glue to make these fun Valentine hearts!
Each student traced three to five hearts on a piece of 12 x 18" piece of paper, placing one heart near the center of the paper. Four lines were then drawn from the edge of the heart or hearts to the edge of the paper to divide the background into sections.
The next step was to tear out magazine or catalog pages that had mostly color and not much text. The students tore the pages into small squares by first tearing the pages into strips, then into small pieces from the strips. Each student used zip locs to keep the color separated. The colors most students selected to use were goldenrod, green, blue, and pink for the background, and red for the hearts. Some even decided to use black.
Then it was time to begin the mosaic by gluing the squares tile fashion (next to one another) onto the background and the hearts. This took patience and perseverance.
When the mosaics were finished, we pressed them under heavy books, allowed time to dry, and then mounted them using red and black construction paper. Have fun reviewing our display!
