Meet the Teacher

Hi and welcome to my classroom's web site! I am currently teaching 4th graders at Canby Elementary School in Canby, Minnesota. I have been a resident of this school district all of my life. In fact, I was a sixth grader at Canby Elementary School the year the school opened (1961).

This is my 26th year as a classroom teacher. I enjoy teaching very much. For me, there is great joy in watching my students develop and change over the course of a year. I also take pleasure in keeping close contact with my students as they continue their education in our district and move onto postsecondary schools and jobs.

My teaching career began in 1972.  I have been a Title I teacher at Canby Elementary School, at Ivanhoe Elementary School and at the Canby High School. For three years I was a junior high mathematics instructor at Canby High School and was then assigned to a 6th grade teaching position at the Canby Elementary School. In 1993 I was assigned the position of Curriculum Coordinator/Staff Development Chairperson in the Canby School District. I served in that capacity for four years after which time I took a position with Minnesota's Department of Children, Families and Learning (DCFL) as a regional staff developer through MEEP (Minnesota Educational Effectiveness Program). In 2002, I returned to the Canby Elementary School as a fourth grade teacher.

My husband and I have three children.  We have twin sons and daughter. All three of our children attended the Canby Elementary School and are graduates of Independent School District #891. We also have three granddaughters and two grandsons. We are anticipating the arrival of another grandchild in October.

My interests include spending time with my husband, children and grandchildren, reading, entertaining family and friends, collecting "Three Little Pigs" books (I have over 150 titles!), and internet Scrabble.

This web site has been developed to share with my students, their parents, and my colleagues. My hope is that it will become a resource for anyone who visits. Please feel free to contact me at dhoyme@canby.mntm.org with your comments and concerns.

Thanks for visiting!
